This SANE course is for Registered Nurses who wish to provide comprehensive compassionate care to clients reporting sexual assault. Nurses may be wishing simply to upgrade their understanding of sexual assault care, or may be using the course to prepare to work with specialized sexual assault/domestic violence teams. The course has been successfully offered (and updated) by Dr. Carter-Snell since 1998, previously through Mount Royal University. It is  now offered through Northwest Polytechnic in Grande Prairie.   It is still online.

  • runs for 12 weeks (48 hrs theory)
  • cost $835
  • asynchronous – can move at own pace. Only 3 discussions have specific dates in which to post and connect with classmates but can be anywhere in course when do that and post at any time during two weeks the discussion is live.
  • developed according to IAFN SANE-A educational criteria but still have to individually apply to have it accepted if choose to write SANE-A
Next start date:  Sept 18, 2023  (tentative). The course will only run if 8 or more register.

This course consists of 8 self-study modules. There are quizzes after each unit to build your knowledge but they don't count toward your final grade.  The marked assignments consist of four case studies (every 2nd module).  We will also have optional tutorials every 2nd week to discuss questions and topics with faculty.

Catherine Carter-Snell

Catherine Carter-Snell is an experienced educator, researcher and registered nurse. Her background includes many years of trauma nursing in Emergency, ICU and flight nursing, as well as work with sexual assault/domestic violence examinations and training. She holds a PhD in nursing and international certification as a sexual assault nurse examiner. Her research is focused on physical and psychological effects of interpersonal violence, especially injuries and improving health care services for victims. She has also developed many educational programs for professionals on dating violence and sexual assault issues including a certificate program in forensic studies for professionals.
